DU BA (Hons.) Sociology Syllabus – Semester 1 to 6

Here’s the complete, semester-wise DU BA (Hons.) Sociology syllabus under the NEP UGCF 2022 structure — covering all Discipline Specific Core (DSC) papers from Semester 1 to 6, along with the credit distribution and a quick guide to each semester’s focus.

Programme Structure at a Glance

BA (Hons.) Sociology carries 3 DSC papers per semester across Semesters 1–6, plus a large Discipline Specific Elective (DSE) pool from Semester 3 onward covering everything from Urban Sociology to Digital Sociology. Each core paper is worth 4 credits (3 theory + 1 tutorial).

Semester 1

Introduction to Sociology — DSC-01 · Sociology of India I — DSC-02 · Introduction to Sociological Research — DSC-03

Loading…

Semester 1 lays the foundation with the discipline’s core concepts, a first look at Indian society through a sociological lens, and an early introduction to research methods — a combination that sets up both the theory and methods tracks running through the degree.

Semester 2

Sociological Perspectives — DSC-04 · Social Stratification — DSC-05 · Families and Intimacies — DSC-06

Loading…

Semester 2 introduces the major theoretical perspectives in sociology alongside two core substantive areas — stratification and the family — that recur throughout later semesters’ electives too.

Semester 3

Sociology of India II — DSC-07 · Political Sociology — DSC-08 · Sociology of Religion — DSC-09

Loading…

Semester 3 is where the DSE pool opens up alongside core papers — options include Urban Sociology, Sociology of Work, and Sociology of Health and Medicine. The DSC papers this semester continue the India-focused track while adding political and religious sociology.

Semester 4

Sociological Thinkers I — DSC-10 · Economic Sociology — DSC-11 · Sociology of Gender — DSC-12

Loading…

Semester 4 introduces classical sociological thinkers as a dedicated paper for the first time, alongside economic sociology and gender studies. DSE options include Sociology of Education, Sociology of Social Movements, and Sociology of Media.

Semester 5

Sociological Thinkers II — DSC-13 · Sociological Research Methods — DSC-14 · Understanding Ethnographies — DSC-15

Loading…

Semester 5 remains core DSC (not purely elective) — continuing the thinkers sequence, formalising research methods training, and introducing ethnographic reading as its own paper. DSE options include Research Methodology for Sociology and Sociology and Social Policy.

Semester 6

Sociological Thinkers III — DSC-16 · Sociology of Kinship — DSC-17 · Environmental Sociology — DSC-18

Loading…

Semester 6 completes your core Sociology Honours coursework — the final instalment of the thinkers sequence, kinship studies, and environmental sociology. DSE options include Digital Sociology, Population and Society, and Sociology of Care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same syllabus as the CBCS Sociology Honours programme?

No — this reflects the current NEP UGCF 2022 structure. Several DSC papers (e.g. Families and Intimacies, Understanding Ethnographies, Economic Sociology as a core paper) are new or restructured compared to the older CBCS syllabus.

Are Semester 5 and 6 elective-only?

No — Semester 5 and 6 both carry 3 DSC (core) papers each, same as every other semester. DSE (elective) papers run alongside DSC from Semester 3 onward, they don’t replace it.

Where can I find the detailed unit-wise breakdown for a specific paper?

This page covers the paper list and credit structure. For unit-by-unit topics, check the linked notes for each paper above (once added), or the official DU syllabus PDF linked in the table above.

How large is the DSE pool for Sociology?

Substantial — 22 DSE options across Semesters 3–8, ranging from Urban Sociology to Sociology of Sports. This page focuses on the core DSC papers; let us know if a dedicated DSE breakdown would help.
